Platform Policies, Explained
Before/After Images and Exaggerated Effects
High risk
Ad creatives must not use before-and-after images to imply unrealistic results, especially concerning health, weight management, or financial gains. Platforms prohibit visual content that exaggerates product efficacy or promises quick or guaranteed outcomes, aiming to prevent user misunderstanding or negative self-perception. Ads must promote responsibly, advocating for healthy lifestyles or realistic expectations.
Ads must not use 'comparison images' to induce self-negation, exaggerate effects, or imply that weight loss or gain is easy or guaranteed. They must not use false or exaggerated rhetoric to lead users to expect unlikely outcomes. When promoting personal health products, ads must not implicitly cause users to develop any negative self-perception about their body image.
Gray area: Some ads may include comparative statements, but require evidence or clear disclaimers. Additionally, images related to 'enhancing male health' are not inherently non-compliant, but become so if they imply 'potency' or 'performance enhancement'.
Image Content and Authenticity
High risk
Ad images must be authentic and not misleading. Platforms prohibit any manipulative visual content designed to deceive, defraud, or circumvent review, including mimicking system warnings, error messages, or non-functional interactive elements. Ad images should clearly and accurately reflect the product or service being advertised, avoiding hidden information or misleading designs that trick users.
Ads must not promote products or services with confirmed deceptive or misleading practices, nor use technical means to conceal ad content. Image ads must not contain misleading content, such as mimicking website warnings or error messages. Manipulating media content to deceive, defraud, or mislead others is prohibited, as is misleading design to trick users.
Gray area: Legitimate localization adjustments, where different page content is displayed to different regions or users, are generally allowed. Animated mock-up features or icons can be included in animated and carousel ads, provided these features are functional or their purpose is explained on the landing page.
Text and Overlays in Images
Medium
Text and overlays in ad images must adhere to specific guidelines to ensure clarity and professionalism. Platforms typically restrict the proportion of text within an image and prohibit non-original text or logo overlays. Any blurry, distorted, or improperly cropped images, as well as animated images or GIFs, may be rejected for negatively impacting user experience.
Text in images (including text-based logos) must not occupy more than 20% of the image area. Images with text or image overlays (including brand logos) or using brand logos as image assets are prohibited. Animated images or GIFs are not allowed, nor are images with backgrounds photoshopped in that were not part of the original photograph.
Gray area: Naturally occurring collage effects (e.g., scrapbooks, greeting cards) are allowed, but post-production collages are prohibited. Logos or text are permitted if they are part of the original photograph.
Dangerous and Inappropriate Visual Content
High risk
Ad images and videos must avoid any content that is frightening, sensational, excessively violent, graphic, or sexually suggestive. Platforms strictly prohibit visual content depicting physical harm, abuse, sexual exploitation, child nudity, or anything that could cause psychological distress to users or promote hatred and discrimination. Even fictional content requires careful handling and may be subject to age restrictions.
Ads must not contain frightening, sensational, or excessively violent content, nor publish any content depicting or describing physical harm, killing, torture, or other harmful acts. Displaying or promoting violence and dangerous activities, as well as inappropriately displaying nudity of minors, is prohibited. Ads must not show disturbing content or promote hatred, bigotry, discrimination, or violence.
Gray area: Some violent scenes may be allowed if the violence is not primarily graphic and does not depict overly gruesome details of death or physical harm. Potentially dangerous behaviors depicted in movies, games, and cartoons, or safety messages shown in an educational context, are generally permitted. Mentions of child abuse in fictional content must be used cautiously and should not distress or offend victims.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why can't my ad images use 'before-and-after' comparisons?▼
Platforms prohibit 'before-and-after' images because they often exaggerate product effects, promise unrealistic rapid results, or induce negative self-perception in users. This violates policies on authenticity and avoiding misleading claims, especially in sensitive areas like health, beauty, and financial gains.
Can I include text in my ad images? Are there any restrictions?▼
Yes, but usually with strict limitations. For example, Google Ads stipulates that text (including logos) in an image must not occupy more than 20% of the total image area. Furthermore, text or logo overlays that are not part of the original photograph are generally not allowed, to ensure image clarity and prevent excessive marketing information.
What constitutes 'misleading imagery,' and how can I avoid it?▼
Misleading imagery refers to any visual content designed to deceive, defraud, or circumvent review. This includes images that mimic system warnings, error messages, non-functional interactive elements, manipulated media content, or hide key information through exaggeration or blurriness. To avoid such issues, ensure your images are authentic, clear, and accurately reflect the product or service, without any designs that could cause misunderstanding.
What are the quality requirements for ad images or videos?▼
Ad images and videos must be clear, professional, and conform to platform layout standards. Blurry, low-resolution, improperly cropped, skewed, or distorted images are prohibited, as are animated images or GIFs (unless specifically allowed by ad format). Video content should also avoid illegible text, poor audio quality, or unrecognizable visuals to ensure a good user experience.
Can my ad images display sensitive or adult content?▼
Platforms have strict restrictions on sensitive and adult content. Images depicting frightening, sensational, excessively violent, graphic, or sexually suggestive content are generally prohibited. Even for artistic or educational purposes, strict age targeting, clear disclaimers, or complete prohibition in certain regions may apply. Child nudity or sexual exploitation content is strictly forbidden under all circumstances.
The information provided in this guide is for reference only. The final compliance decision for ad creatives rests with each platform and may change based on local laws, regulations, and policy updates.
